Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery is a procedure that helps women who have undergone a mastectomy (breast removal due to breast cancer) or have congenital breast conditions to restore the appearance of their breasts. The surgery not only helps to rebuild the breast’s shape and size but also aims to enhance self-esteem, improve body image, and help patients feel whole again.

Types of Breast Reconstruction Surgery

1. Implant-Based Reconstruction:
   • This method involves the use of breast implants to restore breast shape and size. A tissue expander may be used initially to gradually stretch the skin, followed by implant placement once the tissue has expanded.
2. Autologous (Flap) Reconstruction:
   • This technique uses the patient’s own tissue, usually taken from areas like the abdomen, thighs, or back, to reconstruct the breast. This method provides a more natural look and feel. Common flap techniques include TRAM flap, DIEP flap, and Latissimus dorsi flap.
3. Combination Reconstruction:
   • In some cases, a combination of both implants and autologous tissue may be used to achieve the best results. This approach allows for more customized and natural-looking outcomes.
4. Nipple and Areola Reconstruction:
   • After the breast is reconstructed, a second surgery may be performed to recreate the nipple and areola for a more complete and natural appearance.
5. Fat Grafting:
   • Fat grafting involves transferring fat from other parts of the body (like the abdomen or thighs) to the breast area to improve shape and symmetry, often used for subtle refinements after breast reconstruction.
